In our English conversation class at Bucheon College Social Education Center, Mr. Steve teaches us the meanings of the Canada National flag and the America's Star Spangled Banner. But none of us twenty Korean elementary school teachers couldn't tell him the exact meaning of our national flag in english. So I was shocked and ashamed of my ignorances on my own cultures and national symbolisms.

Our country Korea was under Japanese control for the 35 years ending 1945, when Japan surrendered to the Allies. The Armies of Occupation of the United States of America and the U.S.S.R. moved into the southern and Northern Zones respectively-the famous 38th Parallel being an arbitrary boundary dividing us. Within three years, on August 15th 1948- South Korea was granted independence and The Republic Of Korea was inaugurated. Some eight months previously, Generall MacArthur had established a new flag which eventually became the new National Flag of our own.

The field is white, which means our Korean people's desires for the peace. It shows up our heart of loving purity and brightness, for we are always seeking for peace.

In the centre a circular device which is to be found in the writings of the ancient Chinese philosopher, Chu-Hsi, and the two components of which are called 'Yang' and ''Yin' representing the opposites in Nature-male and female, summer and winter, fire and water, heaven and earth, etc. The Taeguk, one grand circle means the spirit of oneness and unity of our nation.

And the circle which cleaves the two red and blue symbolizes Korean people's creativity, meaning the harmony of Yang and Yin, the symbol of the truth which is in the nature, everything of the universe generated and developed through the interaction of things. The shapes formed by the s-like boundary line are red on top and blue below, being variously described as 'strepto cones', "pines,' or commas.'

In each of the corners of the field are parallel bars, broken and unbroken, in black, called 'trigrams(the four black bars)' : these also symbolize the opposite Yin and Yang are changing and growing its shapes progressively through the combination of Hyo(ý¡). the three bars 'Kun' means the heaven, and the four bars 'Kon' means the earth, and the five bars 'Kam' means the water, and the last six bars 'Yee' means the fire.

Steve! Thank you very much for your excellent teaching English basic conversation these days.
