새로운 변화를 기대하는 미국

바락 오바마는 흑인으로서 대통령 선거에 뛰어든 용기있는 사람이다. 존 케리는 오늘 아침 필자에게 보낸 메일에서 마르틴 루터킹을 인용하면서 " 시간은 옳을 일을 행할 때는 항상 우리 편이다. 옳을 일을 행하는 사람에게는 바른 것이다."라고 말하면서 오바마가 차기 미국의 대통령이 될 수 있고(can be),되어야 하고(should be),될 것(will be a next president of U.S.A.)이라고 말했다.

한 주 전에 힐러리 상원의원은 유권자와의 대화에서 눈물을 흘리는 모습을 보여 감성을 자극하는 '이미지 선거'로 원상 복귀 되었다. 다시 여성 대통령이냐 흑인 대통령이냐는 게임에 '돌아온 아이'(Coming back kid)-워싱턴 포스트--되었다. 과연 민주당의 후보가 누가 될 것인가? 여기에 미국 대선의 흥미가 점점 더해 지고 있다.

한편,공화당도 엎치락뒷치락

허커비목사가 아이오와에서 이겼지만 다시 맥케인이 뉴햄프셔에서 역전하면서 힐러리(민주당)와 맥케인(공화당)의 인기가 수직 상승하였다. 그외 유명한 전 뉴욕시장 줄리아니의 당내 지지율은 20%에도 미치지 못하고 있다. 이대로 간다면 맥케인과 힐러리 혹은 맥케인과 오바마의 대결이 예상되지만 아직도 먼 장정에서 속단은 금물이다. 슈퍼 화요일이라고 불리는 2월5일의 오픈 프라이머리를 본 후에 예상해도 늦지 않을 것 같다.

왜 오바마 열풍인가?

미국은 지난 10년간 조지 부시의 등장과 함께 긴 테러와의 전쟁으로 국가의 이익을 잃고 국민들은 전쟁에 지쳤다. 많은 세금 지출,이라크와의 전쟁,오사마 빈라덴 체포작전등으로 국제적인 신인도도 크게 떨어지고 있다. 그 사이에 중국이 약진하여 금방 세계 3위 경제대국이 되었다. 부시가의 전쟁효용론이 강하게 비판받고 있는 마당에서 네오콘(neo-con)으로 불리는 미국 복음주의 진영도 잠시 주춤하고 있다. 그 사이에 미국의 비주류라고 할 수 있는 흑인 오바마는 히스패닉과 아시안계(중국,일본,한국등)의 희망으로 부상되고 있고 실제로 그의 행보는 백인 중심의 사회를 흔들어서 더욱 평등한 사회로의 이양과 '변화'를 바라는 중산층 시민들의 바램을 내포하고 있다.

최초의 여성 대통령은 나올 것인가?

한국 대선에서도 그런 기대감이 표촐되었다. 최근 여성들의 정치적 지도력이 각광을 받고 있다. 전쟁과 비타협보다는 평화와 건강한 공존을 목표로 하는 여성지도자들이 세계 중심국가의 지도력으로 떠오르고 있기 때문이다. 독일의 여성 총리, 호주,캐나다등에 여성이 등장했고, 한국의 박근혜는 유력한 후보로 대등한 지지를 얻었다가 지금도 총리제의를 거절하고 균형을 유지하려고 한다.

힐러리는 남편 클린튼의 후광도 있고 미국의 주요 기독교파인 감리교회의 지도자이고, 여성들에게 큰 인기를 얻고 있다. 뉴햄프셔에서도 눈물이 통할 정도로 아직도 미국사회에서도 여성의 힘은 강하다.

오바마와 힐러리??

존 케리는 오바마를 택했다. 필자는 지난 10년 동안 미국의 대선을 지켜보며 세계의 선두주자로 대표되는 미국의 정치가 어떻게 전 세계의 선택에 영향을 미치는지 생각해 보았다. 만약 미국이 보다 이성적이고 냉정한 세계 경영을 원하고 '자유주의'를 바란다면 민주당을 택하게 될 것이다. 하지만 수 많은 복음주의자가 존재하는 미국의 선거는 아무도 그 결정력이 없다. 그야말로 옳은 것을 선택하고 그 때 시간은 멈춘다. 오래 알고 있던 케리의원이 왜 '옳은 것을 선택하는 그 시간은 항상 정의를 지향한다'는 마르틴 루터킹의 말을 왜 인용했는지 생각해 본다.((PAUL))

We can bring millions of disaffected people – young and old – to the great task of governing and making a difference, child to child, community to community.

Like him, I also lived abroad as a young man, and I share with him a healthy respect for the advantage of knowing other cultures and countries, not from a book or a briefing, but by personal experience, by gut, by instinct. He knows the issues from the deep study of a legislator, and he knows them from a life lived outside of Washington. His is the wisdom of real-world experience combined with the intellect of a man who has thought deeply about the challenges we face.

History has given us this moment. But we need to decide what to do with it. I believe, with this moment, we should make Barack Obama President of the United States.
