￭버지니아 공대 총기난사 사건에 대해 미국NCC에
보낸 편지(국문)
로버트 에드가 총무님께,
한국교회를 대표해서 미국 버지니아 공대에서 발생한 참혹한 총기난사 사건을 당한
학생과 교수, 피해자 가족, 시민 그리고 미국 국민들에게 깊은 애도를 전합니다.
미국 사상 최악의 학교 총기 사건이라는 점은 의심의 여지가 없습니다. 미국
시민들은 비극적으로 생명을 잃은 이들과 부상당해 고통 받는 이들을 보며 극도의 충격, 분노, 그리고 슬픔에 빠져있으리라
생각합니다.
한국계 학생에 의해 이 참사가 발생했다는 소식을 접한 한국사회와 교회 또한 깊은
충격과 슬픔에 빠져 있습니다. 희생자들과 부상자들에게 어떤 위로의 말을 전해야 할지 모르겠습니다.
한국교회와 미국교회는 따로 또는 함께 다양한 사회속의 화해와 평화 공동체를
일구기 위해 노력해 왔습니다. 평화를 위한 우리의 노력들이 결코 헛되지 않기를 바랍니다. 이 비극적 사건을 겪으면서 우리는 젊은
세대들에게 평화적으로 사고하고 평화적으로 사는 법을 교육하기 위한 우리의 헌신을 다져봅니다.
내일 4월 19일 있을 KNCC 정기실행위원회에서는 회원교단 대표들이 참석한
가운데 추모의 순서를 가질 예정입니다. 우리의 고통과 연대의 마음을 충분히 표현할 수는 없지만, 생명을 잃은 희생자들과 상처로 고통
받고 있는 가족들이 하나님의 변함없는 사랑 안에서 평화와 희망을 발견하게 되기를 기원합니다.
부상자들과 사건 후유증으로 고통 받는 이들이 하루속히 회복해서 학교와 일상으로
돌아가기를 기도드립니다. 다시 한 번 한국교회를 대표해서 깊은 애도를 전하며, 위로자 되시는 예수 그리스도 이름으로 기도로 함께
하겠습니다. 우리가 기도할때마다 고통 받는 미국의 자매와 형제들을 기억하겠습니다.

Dear Rev. Dr. Robert Edgar:
On behalf of the Korean Church, I offer our sincere sympathy to the families
and citizens of Blacksburg, Virginia, and indeed all Americans, for the terrible
tragedy that has befallen the students and professors of Virginia Tech
University, and the whole community.
I do not doubt that this is the deadliest school shooting incident in the
history of the United States. Citizens of the US are surely extremely
shocked, angered and grief‐stricken over the tragic loss of life and the
injuries and trauma suffered.
When we received the news that this disaster was inflicted by a Korean
student, all Korean society and the churches felt even deeper shock and
grief. We can find no words with which to console the families of the dead
and injured.
Both the Korean churches and American churches, sometimes separately, often
together, have been working to build a community of reconciliation and peace in
diverse societies. We do not want our all efforts for peace to fail.
Through this tragic event, we recommit ourselves to teach young people a
peaceful way of thinking and a peaceful way of life.
Tomorrow, April 19, the NCCK Executive Committee will meet in order to hold a
memorial service for the victims of this tragedy; representatives of the NCCK
member churches will participate. Although words cannot adequately express
our pain and support, we pray that the families and friends of those who have
lost their lives and those who have suffered injury and trauma may find peace
and hope in God's unfailing love.
We pray that the injured students and all those affected by this tragedy may
find healing and may return to their school and daily life soon. Again, on
behalf of the Korean churches I offer our deepest sympathy and prayerful support
in the name of Jesus Christ who is our Comforter. We will keep our
suffering American sisters and brothers always in our prayers.
