Dear sisters and brothers in Christ! My dearest people called Methodists who are near here in Korea as well as who have come from the far, from all corners of our globe! I warmly welcome you in the most precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

Please, join me and the Korean people in both North and South to praise and to give thanks to God who has already begun comforting the 70 year long-divided nation and separated families in this peninsula. The Spirit of God is tenderly speaking to the broken hearts of both Pyongyang and Seoul and is calling out to both of them that their warfare is at an end. Thank God Almighty that the iniquity of the 70 million Korean people is pardoned at last! Indeed, Koreans have taken from God’s hand double for all their sins.

We may continue in prophet Isaiah’s vision by listening to a voice calling: “Prepare in the wilderness Yahweh’s way. Straighten in the Arabah a highway for our God.” (Isa 40:3-4) Where is the wilderness in our time? And what is the Arabah in our context? The wilderness of the Arabah for us is the Demilitarized Zone between North Korea and South Korea. And it will be prepared and straightened to be a highway for our God who is coming. The voice is nothing but an echo of our gracious Lord Jesus whose first proclamation was “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near, repent, and believe in the good news.” (Mark 1:15) Amen!

Jesus’ good news that the reign of God has come near meant the time of pax Romana was over for the time of pax Christi is fulfilled. His call for repentance is still an alive call for the faithful’s acknowledgement that only God is the sovereign ruler of history forever. Therefore, we gladly   affirm and boldly proclaim that neither Washington, nor Moscow, nor Beijing, but God reigns! Neither Trump, nor Putin, nor Si, but Jesus of Nazareth reigns. Halleluiah!

We read in Ephesians 2:14, “Christ is our peace.” Here, the peace of Christ is in a clear opposition to the peace of empire. The fundamental difference between the two lies in the fact that the peace of empire divides and rules while the peace of Christ unites and reconciles. The rest of Ephesians 2:14 says, “in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing walls, that is, the hostility between us.”

It is most shocking, yet most amazing what Christ crucified, “a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles” (1Cor 1:23), reveals. What an irony it is to accept the cruel imperial tool of punishment, i.e., crucifixion as the sacred symbol of Christian faith, i.e., the cross of peace and reconciliation!

the text, he reminds me of my father who passed away many years ago as well as my father land paralyzed for such a long time.

My father had a stroke when I was in the middle school. His body was paralyzed and he could not speak. From time to time he had a severe headache. Besides, he was not able to work anymore as his diabetes developed a complication. My parents had raised four children and I was their eldest son. My father’s illness and unexpected resignation from his teaching position in a high school plunged our family into poverty. It was not merely my father was paralyzed but my whole family was also paralyzed, not merely my father was ill but my whole family was also ill, and not merely my father felt shame and dishonor but my whole family also felt shame and dishonor.

The paralytic in the text could not walk even with the assistance of others. Therefore, his four friends had to carry his mat all the way from his home to the place where Jesus preached the holy Word of God. If we assume this story of the paralytic as a parable for the paralyzed Korean peninsula, what would become his four friends for Korean people? Unlike the four kind and faithful ones in the Bible the four neighboring nations of the Korean peninsula have not been good to Korea, rather they have been in a constant strife over the vulnerable peninsula in order to secure their own interests.

The paralysis of the Korean peninsula had been caused by an artificial and accidental division imposed upon the victim of Japanese imperialism by the two super powers of the US and Soviet Union in 1945. The 38th parallel which divided the body of Korean people into two pieces was drawn by a few US military officers who feared the rapid intrusion of the Soviet armies into the northern part of Korea. The Soviet Union which declared war on Japan only a few weeks before its surrender was eager to block the so-called American imperialists so that they could not control the whole Korean peninsula.

Then the era of cold war started while the two separate governments in North and South were launched in 1948. However, the Communist regime of North Korea, having ensured the military and strategic support of both Russia and China, invaded the South on June 25, 1950. It is significant to note that both UN and WCC condemned the Korean War caused by North Korea. And the 16 countries of UN sent their military forces to protect the Republic of Korea which UN had recognized as the only legitimate government on the peninsula since North Korea had rejected the general election supervised by UN in 1948.

Ironically the Korean War has not yet been over. Since the armistice between North Korea, China, and the US (South Korea refused to sign it) in 1953, there have been constant threats of war and sporadic military conflicts between North Korea and South Korea in alliance with the US Despite the end of the cold war in 1980s the Korean peninsula has been left as the only country divided and ruled by cold war ideology. Furthermore, even after South Korea has normalized her relationship with Japan, China, and Russia, North Korea has remained the enemy of the US and Japan as well as of South Korea.

For the last 25 years since the first nuclear crisis in 1994 the military tension between North Korea and the US to which the wartime operational control of South Korea belongs has increased to the brink of another war in the peninsula. Pyongyang believes that only being able to threaten the US homeland with a retaliatory nuclear strike can deter US from attempting to overthrow the regime of Kim Jong Un. The escalating threats from the US and North Korea have put North Asia on edge. Therefore, what has happened on April 27 at Panmunjom and on June 12 in Singapore were indeed the incidents that humbled us to acknowledge the mysterious way of the divine providence working in human history.

Isaiah 41:25-42:4 teaches us there were the two kinds of servants of God in history. One was “Cyrus, the founder of the Persian Empire, the world-figure of his time, called by the prophet the shepherd and the anointed, the man of God’s counsel” and the other was “the servant of Jahweh who represents the saving power of innocent suffering and death.” (Paul Tillich, The Shaking of the Foundations, 32) Paradoxically, however, liberating the remnants of Israel out of which the suffering servant arose, the most powerful man of the Empire had to be the servant of the servant of Jahweh. But a Cyrus who rules the Empire and incorporates all the shame and greatness of the Empire is not aware that he carries through God’s purpose in the service of the suffering servants of Jahweh. He does not know what shall become of his deeds.

In his interview with The Nation magazine on June 5, 2018 Prof. Bruce Cumings, one of a few renowned scholars of modern Korean political history, sarcastically pointed out that “In Trump’s madness, there’s opportunity in Korea.” According to him, the North Korean moratorium on testing missiles and testing atomic bombs which has been in effect since last November is an achievement that some of the best experts in the US have called for for years. Prof. Cumings sees a silver lining in having Trump as the US president who may be able to make a lot of progress because he is untethered to the Washington establishment which would raise all kinds of problems and insist on a laundry list of all the things North Korea has to do to please Americans.

Nevertheless, if we look to a Cyrus of our time in our attempts to grasp the future, we shall not know and we shall always remain in darkness. We shall find the solution of the riddle of history as a whole, and of our particular history only if we turn to the true suffering servant of the true God of history. Could we imagine that the extraordinary way of the team of the paralytic to turn to Jesus, the Son of Man, might reveal us the way of turning to the true servant of the true God of history? In real history and in Realpolitik the four strong nations surrounding the Korean peninsula have been the apparently hurting yet actually helping hands of God to train the suffering people of Korea to turn to the true suffering servant of God.

A prophetic intellectual Ham Suk-hun (1901-1989) perceived the trembling hands of God in the tragic division and war of Korea: “The 38th parallel is the line breaking the heart of our nation. Has si-al (minjung/the multitude of people) ripened? Or is it mere husk? God split it with God’s trembling hands. What are the rifles, machine guns, bombs and airplanes of the military forces of both the US in South and the Soviet Union in North? Aren’t they the trembling hands of God? Struggling to understand the meaning of suffering in life and history, Ham searches the world-historical vocation of the si-al in Korea. He viewed the divided Korea as an old harlot whose two hands were pulled by China and Russia and whose two legs were pulled by Japan and the United States. Korea is like Rodin’s famous sculpture, “The Old Courtesan”, who, for the last thousand years, has sat beside the highway which runs from the Asian continent and leads to the Pacific Ocean.

“To all prostitutes men pay fees; but it is you who have paid fees to all your lovers, bribing men from all around to come to you for favors.” (Ezekiel 16:33) Because of the fateful geopolitical condition of the Korean peninsula, all the scum of both Eastern and Western civilizations came to Korea. Using Pauline metaphors, Ham said, “We have been made a spectacle to the whole universe, to angels as well as to men” (1 Corinthians 4:9). And he continues to say,

To be the gutter of world history does not mean to be low profile. On the contrary, it requires extraordinary gut to become the gutter of world history. The gutter must be connected to the stream of water flowing into the sea. It means that si-al, as the gutter of world history, shouldn’t be choked by resentment or han, and should keep its pathway to the infinite sea of God. Therefore, Ham exhorts the Korean minjung to bear the cross of world history joyfully. Only the hottest bellows of suffering can purify them from the idolatry of tribal gods, class gods, and ideological gods.

Let’s joyfully take this burden and go down to the sorrowful neck of the last rapids. … There is Golgotha beyond the rapids. But it cannot threaten the prince of suffering. Just bear this burden. Take up this cross in love, in faith, and in hope to cross the rapids. Then we can sing a song.

Finally we have to re-read the Markan text in order for all of us to proclaim in the Holy Spirit that “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:21) What on earth the four audacious friends of the paralytic are doing? They are not evangelizing by lips only. They have brought the mat on which their poor friend has lain for numerous years. Isn’t this a total evangelism in action? Their way of accessing the holy Word of God taught by Jesus in the center of the house does not reflect any civility at all. It was, you can say, mean and violent. They impolitely climbed over the roof of the holy place where the divine person to whom even the evil spirit obeys preaches. Furthermore, they removed it and even dug it to let down the mat. What a holy disruption!

¿À´Ã ¸¶°¡º¹À½ÀÇ ¸»¾¸À» ´Ù½Ã ¹¬»óÇÏ¿© ¼º·É ¾È¿¡¼ “À̱ÛÀÌ ¿À´Ã ³ÊÈñ ±Í¿¡ ÀÀÇÏ¿´´À´Ï¶ó”¶ó°í °í¹éÇؾ߰ڽÀ´Ï´Ù. Áßdz º´ÀÚÀÇ 4 Ä£±¸´Â ¹«¾ùÀ» ÇßÀ»±î¿ä. But it is more surprising to hear what Jesus responds to them. The Bible says, “When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.” (Mark 2:5) Do you notice how fatal this remark is? A mere son of man cannot dare to forgive sins because God alone does it. This blasphemy will eventually lead to the death sentence to Jesus. Here, you may perceive a providential chain reaction for salvation which all begins from the holy disruption of the audacious 4.

I consider the holy disruption of the audacious 4 one of the most imaginative and creative performances of the collective confession of sin in the Scripture. Even we Christians including the people called Methodists have long lost the precious heritage of confessing sins boldly. And we also lost the blessing it brings to us. “Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for on another, so that you may be healed.” (James 5:16a)

Dear friends in Christ! ¿¹¼ö ±×¸®½ºµµ ¾È¿¡ ÇüÁ¦ ÀڸŠ¿©·¯ºÐ

Let’s confess our sins to one another and dare to forgive one another so that we may be healed and saved! Are you really ready to pray the Lord’s Prayer? “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matt 6:12) For many South Koreans, especially for Christians among them, it is almost impossible to forgive their Communist enemies of North as well as the unrepentant Japanese. At this kairotic moment I challenge you to repent and to confess your inmost sins not to forgive your enemies. For the rest of you who are here today I earnestly ask you to pray for us Koreans in both North and South so that by the grace of God we gladly forgive one another and forgive each one’s historic enemies in Japan, China, Russia, and US. And join me to appeal to the people still hardened in their enmity and anger to sing a song rather in humor:
